I had added two large additions to the house in the 1980s and in the 1990s. Both of these
additions were built above crawl spaces. I had personally dug out the ground for the foundation walls
which were constructed with concrete blocks and had a footer about three feet underground. Ever since then
I had wished that all that space was a basement. So one of the things we wanted to do for the new house was to dig out the
crawlspace and underpin the foundation walls, creating a large new basement. This was a daunting task, it was mostly done by hand
and could only progress about 4 feet at a time. Every section had to be inspected and approved by the county
before the builders could move on. The whole process took probably about two and a half
months, but the result was really great. We ended up with a large new basement space.
