Our third stop on this cruise was at Civitavecchia, Italy, considered to be the port
of Rome. However, Rome is not close (one and a half to two hours away) and we would
have to take a long bus or train ride. The day was also Republic Day in Italy, a
national holiday commemorating the vote in 1946 to abolish the monarchy. We had been
alerted that certain public services and transport might be impacted. We had been to
Rome before, on a longer trip, and plan to return again, so we decided not to go to
Rome on this trip. So we wandered around Civitavecchia, which has a large Michaelangelo
fort at the waterfront, an interesting archeological museum, and of course, several
interesting churches.
