Our fourth and final stop on this cruise was in Limossol, Cyprus. I (John) was a bit
under the weather with a cold I had caught so Susan went off alone on the walking tour
of the old city we had arranged. Limossal is home to the tech portion of the state university,
the rest being in the capital Nicosia. This is another town with layers of civilization
in its history, modernizing areas while keeping the old character. There are many old
churches and mosques of course, some built by Ottomans on top of earlier Christian churches.
A rather unremarkable large, off-white building, is an ancient palace. Richard I, the
Lionhearted, stopped in Cyprus on his way to the Crusades, and in that building his wife
Berengaria was crowned queen, the only English queen crowned outside the country and the
only one never to visit it.
