The first stop on our second cruise was in Kusadasi, Turkey. We had prearranged a
private tour with a local guide to take us to Ephesus and Miletus. I (John) lived
in Ankara, Turkey, for about 6 years, first when I was elementary school and then
for about two and a half years in high school. This was a big highlight because
it was the first time I had been back to Turkey since then. We first went to Ephesus,
which is a huge active archaeological site. For centuries, it was a major city in the
Roman and Greek eras and a major trading center. The library at Ephesus, (with the
tall columned facade) was the second-largest in the world after the Library of
Alexandria. After Ephesus, we drove to Miletus, a smaller, yet still important
city in ancient times.
